Im Jahr 2000 verließen Aaron Fink und Mark James Klepaski die Alternative-Metal-Band Lifer, welche gerade mit Universal einen Plattenvertrag abgeschlossen hatte, und schlossen sich mit Ben Burnley und Jeremy Hummel zusammen, um Breaking Benjamin zu gründen.
